Confused theft.

at a retail store i went to pick up something and i got a set of fake rings out of the price tag to try on, they broke and i left them by the clothes. then on my way out of the store i stopped by the rings again and got one (8.99) out of the price tag, tried on and walked around looking at thing, then went out of the store with the ring. shame on me :-( i was stopped at the parking lot by the security guy who took me to the office and called the police, then another security guy showed with the broken rings i left by the clothes, they started taking pics of the rings and told me they had me in tape. when the police officer showed, he gave me a paper and told me its a ticket and to wait until i hear from court. i have no record, never had a legal problem before, i'm so ashame for this stupidity, i can't believe i have done this! i'm very sad. what can i expect?

Default Re: theft.

Make sure you get legal counsel (or at least the public defender) to try to keep this off your record eventually--jail time is not likely if your record is clear now. But having that arrest and/or a conviction on your record could make job-hunting etc. more difficult. Often this could be negotiated down to some kind of court supervision or even be dismissed etc. If it eventually appears it cannot be negotiated down, or you need to discuss this in more detail with senior counsel to review options etc., please let us know here or email world law for further discussion.
