Question Outraged Inlaws

My fiance and I have just forbiden his parents from seeing our 1 year old son (whom they barely ever came to see in the first place) because his father doesnt like the rules we have for our son so he went off tonight and hit my fiance. The man has hit me once in the past because I didnt wanna get in a picture with him at that moment so my fiance and i have always been a lil shakey with him being around the baby. Well he just told my sister inlaw that the are taking us to court for rights to see my son. Can they even do that?
