I am currently in the process of switching my primary care doctor. I do have medical coverage through my employer. I chose a local doctors office, although I'd heard a rumor or two that this office tends to "forget" appointments that they've made, I decided to take a chance.
1) I called them to make my first appointment. Upon giving them all of my "new patient" information on the phone, I was asked for my Social Security#. I told them I'd prefer not to give it out. I was then advised that if I do not give them my SSN, I would be forced into a "cash basis" position with them instead of using my usual insurance with a co-pay. Are they within legal rights to do that? 2) I made an appointment, then asked for confirmation of the appointment in writing. They seemed surprised I'd asked for confirmation in writing, but agreed. I later returned home to a message on my voice mail from the same medical office stating that they "do not do that there" and they refused to give me the confirmation in writing. Are they within their legal rights to do that too? I think I'm just appalled that these doctors receive about $80.00 to see us for approximately 3 to 5 minutes, yet their office staff "doesn't have the time" to do anything the patients wishes. Am I wrong? And can I legally retaliate? |

They cannot demand your SS number...you may call the medical licensing board about that--or threaten to do so anyway.
They don't need to give you written confirmations--you can however choose another office to go to. |
