EEK! 2005 National Survey on Drug Use: Are drug laws protecting kids in the United States?

Q:
Why does the most recent 2005 National Survey on Drug Use report that over 800000 adolescents ages 12-17 have sold illegal drugs if the laws are supposed to protect kids?

Excellent question. The answer is because the drug laws are, and always have been, an absolute fraud. Historically speaking, the biggest single cause of drug epidemics among children is hysterical anti-drug campaigns.

The first example was the alcohol epidemic during alcohol Prohibition. Prohibition was passed with a campaign of "Save the Children from Alcohol." Within five years, record numbers of kids were in hospitals and courts for alcohol problems. Schools had to cancel dances because so many kids showed up drunk. Children became involved in the bootlegging trade -- just as they are involved in the illegal drug trade today. The average age at which people started drinking dropped dramatically. Some of the early supporters of Prohibition turned against it because they said that Prohibition made it easier than ever for their kids to get drugs. Prohibition was repealed in 1933 with a campaign of "Save the Children from Prohibition."

There are many other examples. Glue sniffing, speed, and LSD are just three more examples. There is an excellent history of the subject in the Consumers Union Report on Licit and Illicit Drugs.
