Default Be aware of fireworks laws in Washington state

Before getting caught up in all the joys and excitement this weekend has to offer, anyone who is considering purchasing or discharging fireworks this week should briefly familiarize themselves with local laws before lighting their punks.

According to Municipal Research and Services Center of Washington (MSRC), firework vendors, manufacturers, and display planners are required to obtain a state license and another government jurisdiction, typically city or county. Insurance is also required. For 2009 there were more than 800 fireworks stand licenses issued throughout the state, 17 of which are issued for Pacific County.

The MSRC Web site states that, "fireworks regulation is largely governed by the state fireworks law (Chapter 70.77 RCW) and the administrative regulations adopted by the Washington State Patrol (Chapter 212-17 WAC)."

The dates and times that fireworks may be sold or used are set by state law. Summer fireworks may be sold from noon to 11 p.m. on June 28; 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on June 29 through July 4; and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on July 5.

They may be discharged from noon to 11 p.m. on June 28; 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. from June 29 through July 3; 9 a.m. to midnight on July 4; and 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on July 5.
