Default Education... Student vs. Parents

I am 17 years old and currently claimed as a dependent on my parent's taxes. My legal issue arises on the responsibility of paying for college. Since I was claimed as a dependent my financial aid, provided by the FAFSA form, extends from my parent's contributions. However, I have chosen to attend Central Michigan University instead of Michigan. Upon this decision my parents have refused to pay towards my education. However, if I were to attend the University of Michigan my parents would pay for tuition. I understand that this does not constitute as an "unusual" case for colleges to override the dependency. I am wondering what I can do to ensure my attendance to Central Michigan University during the fall of 2009. Will I be able to make a claim based on the fact that the government, as well as the institution holds parents as the primary contributor for college? With the understanding that my parents would agree to pay for one but the other; does this fall under irresponsibility and possibly negligence towards my education and future? I bring negligence to the table because to my understanding it is a breach of duty when one exposes another to a substantial risk or loss. Without the continuous succession of education this following fall, I would be putting myself at an inevitable disadvantage against those my age attending college. In this case I would consider my education and future well being to be at risk and clearly at a loss. Since I was given no prior notice to the outcomes of my decision, even with two jobs, I have not nearly saved enough to cover even the cost of a few books. I was under the influence through an oral or verbal contract that my parents would help me pay for college no matter what university I attended, there were no stipulations against the sort. I understand that is a very grey area in law and not much has been set as a precedent for these types of cases. I only ask if I have legal action because unlike other cases, my parents have the resources and the willingness to provide me for one college but not the other. Does this infringe upon my rights as a child, dependent or student?

Default Re: Education... Student vs. Parents

They do not have to pay any of your college fees unfortunately, it is up to them.

You all have to agree--or not.
