Confused What are my rights? Will the police protect us from my ex-boyfriend?

I moved in with my ex-bf for about 4.5 months before I decided to leave him. It was not a pleasant separation and he forbade me from getting my stuff that I brought into his house. He threatened me over text messages and by phone claiming he has a restraining order for me and that he sold all my stuff as payment for my stay in his house. We did not have any written agreement; just a verbal one and I paid all the bills in the house (except the mortgage) while I was living there. I have all the receipts of my stuff and the bills I paid. Can I get my stuff back? I was told I can have police assistance but I'm afraid he will harm my husband and I when we go to pick up my stuff in his house. Please tell me if the police will protect us from him should he act up when we are there and if he can indeed file an RO against me. Thanks.
