At this point, you don't need a passport to go to Canada if you are driving. As long as you have proof of citizenship, you'll be okay. However, if you want to get a work permit, or work visa, that may be another story. Being a convicted felon won't stop you from getting a passport, but Canada may now allow you to stay for an extended period.

You always have to apply for a passport (no matter who you are). If you are on parole your application can be denied but otherwise you should be able to get one though may not qualify for a visa-free entry to most countries that Canada has treaties with because of your criminal record.

You can get a passport. Depending on what your record is for determines where you can use your passport. If you have a record in Canadia it will follow you around in your FPS record regardless of your passport situation.

I have a DUI charge and the case was adjourned for another year because the officer had to have knee surgery. However, by the time it goes to court it will be a total of 2 years. My passport will expire by that time, can I still renew my passport even though my case is still pending? Thank you.
