I have been in a committed oposite sex domestic partnership for 21 years. My partner has decided after meeting another woman 14 years younger than
himself that he is no longer happy with me. He never told me we were through, I found it out through my therapist. We own a house together, I am on both the deed and the mortgage. We are both still living in the house. Neither one of us has money to buy the other out. It's a very tense situation. I know NYS doesn't recognize common law marriages, but don't I have some kind of legal rights? If we were married, I would have rights, why not now? He also just filed a Affidavit of Termination of Domestic Partnership sent it to me certified, but I did not sign for it. It just happened to come back to our address when it was returned by the post office. I don\'t know what this means legally. Family Court has just implimented an ACT to amend the family court act to include unmarried couples to their Committee on Rules. I think the Act # is 8665, but I'm not sure. If this was implemented in family court to give me rights why does it not extend to other courts. His first marriage only lasted 10 years and the ex wife got 10% of his pension. Can't I get something out of this relationship besides heart ache?? I loved this man for 21 years, went through his child support for 21 years, college tuition, the wrath of his ex wife and many more situations you could not believe. We made plans for when we retired together. Now that won't happen. I don't know what to do. I don't want to be out in the street with no where to go. He has threatened to somehow make me leave the house. I am really afraid that he will take steps to do something like this but I don't know what or if he can. He is not the man that I met 21 years ago and right now, I don't know what he is capable of. Please Help Me. I don't know where else to turn. Thanks, Pat G. |
