If I want to carry a small amount of material in my personal vehicle that is found as class 9 on the federal DOT hazardous materials table, can I do that? The only law I could find is in CFR Title 49 172.504 that says for less than 1001 lbs you don't have to have a placard on the vehicle, but I am wondering if there are any requirements for the kind of driver's license you have or the reason for transportation. I don't want to pay an expensive courier to move these things if I don't have to, and I talked to someone I know that is a contractor for a courier. He uses his personal vehicle for all his deliveries, and he says he can take anything under 1000 lbs and he does not have any special license. It just seems improbable, so I wanted to see if anyone could point me to the regulations that would support or preclude personal vehicle transport of hazardous materials in small quantities.
