Question Providing Information to a 3rd Party

Does an employer have the right to provide the status of a medical leave to a third party?

My employer advised a mortgage company I was on a medical leave when they called to verify employment. The loan was denied. The mortage company stated if the employer would have just stated "yes" I was currently an employee with the company, the loan would have been funded. As a result I will loose my home. Do I have any recourse?
