Default getting rid of someones property

how long do I have to wait before i can get rid if my ex's household property. My ex is in jail and i am only here until july, but all his stuff is here and i and I really don't want to hold on to it. If he can't find someone to take it how long do I have to wait before i can sell it or just get rid of it all together???
