Question legal responsibility

my friends and I are arguing about legal responsibility. here is the case. my roommate's girlfriend was at our apartment during a gathering, and had her camera out looking at pictures. One of my other roommates, roommate #1 was bouncing a small rubber basketball next to roommate #3. There are two ways the rest of the story is remembered. first scenario, roommate #1 bounced the ball towards roommate #3 who instinctively slapped it to avoid it hitting him, sending the ball through the camera and breaking it as it hit the floor. in the second situation, roommate #3 got annoyed with roommate #1's bouncing ball and slapped it out of said annoyance. Is anyone legally responsible to pay for the damages in either scenario, and if so, who?
