Confused Car Loan & Repo

The loan for my car is in my ex's name. Due to financial difficulties I was late on a couple of payments but I found out yesterday that he has made them. When he came to pick up our son for visitation, he stopped at the local police station first to have them there when he picked up our son so that he could take the car from me, leaving me with no form of transportation. He informed me that he has made the payments & I asked if he could give me until Fri to pay him for those payments. He refused stating the bank has requested him to pick up the car & have issued orders for it to be repo'ed. If the payments are now current and was behind by 3 which are now paid, it would no longer be requested to repo. Today I recieved an email from him giving me 2 choices, let the bank repo the car, sell at auction, then sue him for balance & then he'd sue me. OR to give him the amount of payment, plus pay him for the gas he put in & get someone to refinance the car to take it out of his name. In beginning of email he stated that he does not want, need, or can afford the car. My thinking is that if he refused my offer to pay him the money for what was owed & insisted on taking the car, he would be unable to sue me since I had offered to pay but he was only in the mindset of taking the car from me & nothing else would do. I did not tell him to take it or put gas in it, for the 3 hr drive to where he is staying, so I do not owe him that money either. Since the payments are now current, can he request the bank to take back the car just so that he can sue me for the balance of the loan when I offered to pay him the amount that was due on Fri & he refused???? I no longer want the car after this scene that he has created in front of our children & am making other arrangements for a car. I am in Iowa.

he normally can take it then and you have to file in court if you want to argue that you really have paid and should be given rights etc

but you weaken your case to have rights to the car if you are failing to make payments and damaging his credit
