I live in the state of maryland. My wife is $40,000 in credit card debt and is unable to pay. We have no joint assets and never had any joint assets. Is there any way that I can be held liable for these debts? If so, what can I do to protect myself?

If the credit card is solely in your wife's name, recovery of the debt will be made against her. Any assets she may have will be persued if the debt is not paid and joint assets can be included (at least her share of the joint assets). This would include if her name is listed as joint owner of your home/car.
