Definition in Last Will & Testament

My mother in laws will states:

I leave my residence located @ (such & such address) to my children (3 names
listed), share and share alike.. However, I grant a life estate interest in
and to said real estate to my husband, name listed.. What exactly does \"I
grant a life estate interest in and to said real estate to (husbands
name)?????? Any information you can provide would be greatly
appreciated!!!!!
