A couple of months ago I visited my family doctor's physicians assistant with symptoms of stress and anxiety. I was having episodes of shaking and dizziness. She gave me an ekg which was slightly abnormal with an inverted T-wave reading. I was prescribed an anti anxiety medication and told to come back in a month. I went back in a month and received another ekg which came back the same as the first. I was referred to a cardiologist and when I visited him he scheduled me for a stress test. I took the stress test and failed it when my ekg showed a inverted T-wave again. I then took a cardio lite stress test and then had pictures taken of my heart. After the second round of pictures I was told I would get results in a few days. My family doctor called me at 7 pm that same evening and tells me I have heart disease and I need to keep my heart rate down as much as possible or I might have a heart attack. Suddenly all of my thirty years pass in front of my eyes, and yes I'm only thirty years old. Meanwhile my doctor wrote a note saying I was to be off duty from work for a week. Well needless to say my employer didn't like that too well so they put me on short term disability until I was back to full health. Even with the disability I couldn't afford to be off work so it was a mad dash to get healthy. I got in touch with the prairie heart group and scheduled an appointment for a heart cathaterization. Two days before the appointment I wasn't feeling too good, kind of dizzy and having chest pains. My wife called an ambulance and we went to the hospital. I stayed the night and had a heart cathater the next day. And amazingly there was no blockage anywhere that they could find. The cardiologist that did my procedure said my chest pains were probably acid reflux and I was completely healthy. So I basically had the crap scared out of me and my family, lost a weeks pay, and had a needless surgery for absolutely nothing! A second opinion would've saved me a lot of money but being off of work time was not on my side. Thank god I have insurance!
