Confidentiality breech? My mom is a psychotherapist...

Im not sure if this is in the right forum but my mom is a psychotherapist, and the other day she was asking me a question about my girlfriends mom after a rumor she heard. It had to do with some other legality issues, so i asked why she was asking, and she said you know i can't discuss my patients with you. If im correct if a psychotherapist knows the same people as their patient, or has an other social connection to their life they have to see another doctor. She clearly indicated that her patient knows my girlfriends mom, and im pretty sure that my mom shouldn't have asked me a question based on information she got during an appointment. Does anyone know the laws around these questions? I live in wisconsin.
