My mother fell recently in her home and laid there for 20 hours before my brother got off work to check on her. She was confused and feverish. My brother took her to the hospital ER where the doc examined her for broken bones. She was still confused and unable to urinate. He never did blood work, no CT of the head, just the basic xray. He sent her home. A few hours later she fell out of bed again, and was confused and hallucinating, but still got my brother on redial. She was taken back to the ER via ambulance, and the doctor still just wanted to do the basic xray. My brother had to demand for him to contact her general practioner to come out. When he got there, he did CT of head and discovered she had had a stroke. Not only that she had a kidney infection that had made her septic. Her BP was very low so she was given fluids and iv meds to get her bp up. She is known as a cardiac patient, and had bypass surgery couple years ago. Her carotids are both blocked at 60 and 30 percent. She also has a hole in one of her valves found in her bypass surgery that nothing can be done about. I know she has alot of pre-existing conditions, but as a nurse I know these illnesses contributed to her latest illness. I feel if the doctor and just done his job, the infection and sepsis could have been caught and stopped early. He would have also seen she had had a stroke.
I really need some info if this is a case, and where do I even begin getting things started. Also would I be able to get her medical records or would my brother who has power of attorney? |

Although I am not an expert, I am not a doctor, I did work at a nursing home for 5 years....
The reason why most doctors go "over the edge" in their treatment is because they are afraid of missing something. In this case, it seems to be more complaicent. Sorry for the spelling... If you have a fall, Young or Old, comes with a CT. Most cases it shouldn't be necessary... but if it involves the elderly, it does. Yes, in my opinion, the septic and other complications could have been minimaized if handled correctly.
