Default Anti-Smoking Drug Linked to Psychiatric Risk

Chantix (varenicline), a prescription medication used to help patients stop smoking, may cause or exacerbate psychiatric illness, according to a Public Health Advisory issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA is advising consumers to tell their health care provider about any history of psychiatric illness prior to starting Chantix, because Chantix may cause worsening of current psychiatric illness -- even if that illness is currently under control -- and may also cause an old psychiatric illness to reoccur. According to the FDA, 37 suicides and more than 400 cases of suicidal behavior have been linked to Chantix. The Associated Press reports that in November, the FDA "began investigating reports of depression, agitation and suicidal behavior among patients taking the popular twice-daily pill." Chantix is manufactured by Pfizer and was approved by the FDA in May 2006.

Default to assist smoking addicted people

Hi, I'm jack.I want to share something,
In order to assist smoking addicted people in triggering off smoking cessation, Saint Anne's Hospital is prepared to start off with a quit smoking program that is likely to continue for eight weeks. Moreover it is known that this smoking cessation program is designed by American Lung Association and smokers can avail of this program at a cost of $25.

According to Dixie Tavares, a registered nurse of Saint Anne's Hospital responsible for coordinating the quit smoking program (www.chantixhome.com), the smoking cessation program is aimed at helping people quit smoking via behavior modification. She adds that once smoking addicted individuals are enrolled in the program certain issues are inquired into as to why they are addicted to smoking and altogether proper care is taken to educate them on handling stress, dieting and exercising.
