Default Romance Novelists Sue Publisher Over E-Book Royalties

Three romance novelists have sued Harlequin Enterprises Ltd. in a breach-of-contract lawsuit alleging the Canadian publisher has failed to pay them and other authors their full royalties on e-book editions of their works.



The novelists claim that Harlequin Enterprises is subverting the agreement by claiming it must obtain a license to publish e-books from a Swiss entity that only exists for tax purposes, according to the lawsuit.

Traditionally, Harlequin received 50% of a book’s cover price as net receipts and the author was paid half of that amount, according to the lawsuit.
