The North Carolina government prides itself on strict punishments for driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances. The Department of Crime Control and Public Safety says the state's laws make punishment particularly severe for repeat offenders. In addition to dealing with the court system, impaired drivers face separate penalties from North Carolina's Division of Motor Vehicles.
