How to Draw Business to the New York Business Court
Two prominent Manhattan legal experts charged with bringing the state's clogged commercial court division into the 21st century have issued their prescription.
In a nutshell: to avoid losing cases to other jurisdictions with more efficient and business-friendly courts, New York needs to hire more judges and staff, streamline the court’s procedures and raise the monetary threshold for cases so that only truly high-stakes litigation appears on the docket. For instance, in New York County the threshold should be boosted from $150,000 (set 17 years ago at the time the court was formed) to $500,000, according to report issued Tuesday by the Task Force on Commercial Liotigation in the 21st century.
