Michigan's Indigent Defense Advisory Commission is due to present its report to Gov. Rick Snyder on how to improve representation for low-income defendants.
Since 1980, several independent groups have asked Michigan to change its method of providing lawyers for the poor, with a 2008 study by the National Legal Aid & Defender Association saying the system was a “constitutional crisis.” State Rep. Tom McMillin is part of the commission, and, as a Republican and former leader of the Christian Coalition in Michigan, seems an unlikely ally to a cause that’s been championed by the American Civil Liberties Union.
