Default Judge Sam Sparks Defends “Kindergarten” Order

Federal judge Sam Sparks of Austin made waves recently with his August order asking certain lawyers to attend a “kindergarten party" because, in the judge's view, they had engaged in petty squabbling. Sparks today spoke to the Law Blog in defense of his order.

Asked whether he would change his writing style in light of Jones’s rebuke, Sparks said, “absolutely not. I’ve been in the courtroom almost 50 years. If I don’t know how lawyers should behave in court then I’m in trouble.” He added: “I got hundreds of letters from state and federal judges across the country supportive of that order.”

Judge Jones declined to talk to the Law Blog about Judge Sparks.
