Gay Marriage Faces Obstacles in Many States (same-sex marriage, constitutional bans)
While it's easy to imagine that New York's landmark new same-sex marriage law will set off a tidal wave of similar measures nationwide, that is not likely to happen.
 The New York Times has a piece today looking at the hurdles faced by those advocating for gay marriage, starting with the fact that 29 states have constitutional bans on same-sex marriage and another 12 states have laws restricting it. No state referendum to outlaw same-sex marriage has been defeated at the ballot box, the Times reports, and a proposal to ban same-sex marriage will go before Minnesota voters next year. Meanwhile, there appears to be little movement in Congress to overturn the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which denies federal benefits to married same-sex couples, according to the Times.
