Michael Newdow is an emergency-room physician. He's also an atheist, a lawyer and a one-man litigation machine.



Most of Newdow’s gripes concern the Establishment Clause of the Constitution. That’s the phrase in the First Amendment that says that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.”

Newdow, an avowed atheist, has unsuccessfully challenged the use of the phrase “so help me God” in the presidential oath, the appearance of the words “In God We Trust” on U.S. currency, and on the pledge of allegiance, which includes the words “under God.”
