Driving While Texting: The New DUI?

The regular Sunday special from Sen. Charles Schumer is worthy of note this week because it deals with a particularly trendy and dangerous problem: Texting while driving (an especially dangerous extension of of cell phone distraction). He's calling for a nationwide law to ban the practice.

"Nearly 100 teenagers were killed in the New York City area in just the last five years in accidents where the driver was found to be texting while they were driving," he states today. "According to data from the U.S. Department of Transportation, nearly 1 out of every 5 car accidents occurred because the driver was found to be texting or using their cell phone -- with the greatest portion of those accidents involving drivers under the age of 20."
