I am renting a room in a one family house. There's 3 other renters, each renting a room. My landlord informed me she had to convert my room into a livingroom. Here's other factors: a) I am the ONLY one who has to leave b) although she has found another place for me, it will cost more without the same accomodations (i.e., free cable) c) was only given a 2week notice to leave d) she informed me her rentals are illegal e) my landlord is a real estate agent. Am I entitle to money back? What do I do? Where do I start?

All of this depends on where you live (1. what state?). In some areas, 2 weeks notice is sufficient. You don't mention a lease, 2. do you have one? 3. Are you a month to month tenant? 4. Are you paying your rent monthly, or by some other interval?
In some states, 4 unrelated renters in one house violates local laws. There may be a local ordinance that allow no more than 3 unrelated persons to reside in the same house. (This may be what she referred to as an illegal rental.) Or the house may not have been inspected, met code to get a certificate of occupancy, etc. But since you are the only one who has to move, I suspect it is the number of tenants that is illegal. 5. Were you the last to move in, or are you just in the room that needs to be converted? 6. Has she received a notice from the local authority forcing her to remove one tenant? You are not entitled to any money back for rent during the period you lived there, except in a few rare places. If you lived there, you received the benefits of the place and need to pay for that. If the LL has been ordered to remove a tenant and you have no lease, she is under no obligation to find you another place, regardles of the new place's cost. Please post more info to answer the above 6 questions and I can refer to specific state laws. |
