Default Small apartment fire

A small fire in my apartment kitchen was caused by my carelessness. I was not at home when the fire department responded. There was minor water damage and the smoke damage has made it uninhabitable. I'm staying with friends and all of my posessions are still in the apartment. The landlord has called, wanting to hear my version of what happened. Does he have the right to ask this? Do I have the right to ask him when I can enter my apartment to claim my belongngs? Thank you.

He is asking you for your version because he probably already has the fire department's record of the fire call to your unit. Be glad he wants your version before he automatically holds you liable. Of course, he has the right to ask. You caused a fire that damaged his property. Tell him the truth and he may go easy on you. You will be responsible for the damages to the unit. You may ask him when the fire department will allow you to re-enter the unit. Re-entry is usually decided by the fire department or building inspector. Thay have to rule it safe to enter before anyone can go in to the unit. (If there was a crime involved, the police might decide this. But in your case, its the fire department probably.)
