sex offender housing
Good day,
how does a person with a criminal history ( S/O ) able to rent, lease, purchase a new home, mobile home, or buy property. Though the sentence was a defered ajudicated with only a 5 yr probation, many properties, landlords, agentcies and other lenders seem to view it as a ''one size fits all'' situation. what options are there ? |

Many LLs don't want the liability that comes with the label of SO in their property. If one did rent to a SO, then the unthinkable happened, the LL could be held liable for knowingly renting to the SO. However, the labnel of SO does not affect you ability to purchase a new home, mobile home, or buy property as long as the property meets the guidelines of acceptable properties (that is, the property is not within 1000 feet of a school, day care center, etc., or whatever guideline applies to your state). As long as the property is outside of the boundaries set by law, you are free to buy any property you wish.
The best thing you can do to rent property is to be honest with the LL. Let them know upfront what you were convicted of, the circumstances, what counseling you went through, and that it is unlikely to happen again (at least, I hope so). Some private LLs will take a chance on you. But don't lie about it. Most LLs do criminal background checks. Failure to disclose something like this will be an automatic denial. Keep trying private LLs and you will find one who will allow you to rent. You might try to find places that are adult only, or communities of older tenants. |
