Default Can you get into trouble if owner does something illegal?

I am just curious. If the owner does some illegal, and you do what they tell you to do, can you get into trouble with the law? The owner did something I did not know was illegal and the tenant informed me it was, and I have looked it up and they are right. I was instructed not to let a tenant in as the locks were changed due to back rent. The owner had this done himself after sending an eviction letter. The tenant did come and pay so I did let them in, but if they did not pay and brought the police and they told me to let them in and I would not because I was instructed not to, could I get into trouble. They are going to file charges against the owners, or at least they said they were. If they did and it would like go to court, would I have to go since I actually had nothing to do with it. Could I be charged? I do not have any type of record and certaintly do not want one.

Lexi, are you the property manager or the agent for the owner? If so, you need toknow what the laws say in your state about illegal evictions. Please read up on these and send a copy to the owner of the property. For now, if you are called to court, plead ignorance and state that you were just following instructions from the owner. But in future, refuse to follow illegal procedures and instruct the owner as to the proper course of action for non-payment.
