Default Tenant's Move-Out Responsibilities

My landlord told me that it was my responsibility to have the carpets professionally cleaned before I can get my deposit back. I've only lived in the house for 10 months and in the past it was always my understanding that as long as I left the house in the same condition as when I first rented it, that I should get all of my deposit back. Unfortunately, the cost to shampoo the carpet (professionally) has also always been deducted from my deposit. What's the law on this? Do they have a right to enforce that I have the carpets cleaned? Can they deduct professional carpet cleaning from my deposit?

You are not required to do that. Only to leave it as it was.
That should be in the lease if it was required.
Take him to small claims if need be.
