Confused Somethings not right in this....help

Our son and his girlfriend rented an apartment with both on the lease. They got in a fight and he is now in jail. No injury tho. Thing is he is not allowed back to apartment as his gf filed a protective order but the furniture belongs to us. It's not his nor his girlfriends. Problem is landlord said we can not get it unless 250.00 is paid for two weeks back rent even tho she the landlord said he could not return and allowed his girlfriend to remain and take over the lease. But the landlord will not takes ours sons name off until the back rent is paid. Isn't he only accountable for his half? And we assumed it was illegal to hold the furniture since the sherriff told us we had a right to get it. What should we do? Thing is his ex-gf has no furniture of her own and she will soon not have any utilities because we paid the deposit out of our checking for our son. The amount the landlord wants is the amount needed for the girlfriend to get the utilities in her name and if she doesn't she can't rent from them......it was in the lease. Help.

He can ask the sheriff to escort him to get the furniture. The sheriff may do so unless the landlord can show he has a valid lien now on the items for non-payment.
