Question. I moved out of an apartment housing complex, gave my landlord the specified amount of notice for termination. I actually moved earlier because my husband got a job in a new state, so we vacated but still had the keys to the apartment, and technically still lived there. I received a call 1 month before my official move out date, it was the Landlord asking if i would havea problem with them moving someone in earlier becasue they had someone lined up, and then that way i wouldn't owe them the prorated rent for the half of a month i would have been there. Me wanting to save money said i was fine with that, and asked if i mailed her my keys, I then wouldn't be responsible for the rent, she said yes. I now get a letter in the mail citing that they were unable to place a tenant and are now seeking my rent for the half of a month. What can i do... I had been told i was no longer responsible, and even asked that if there were any issues to call me so that i could come up with the money, and if they were so unsure about this tenant then why did they ask for the keys if they had no idea if they were moving or not? Help, what are my rights, what can i do....

If they made an agreement with you and you surrendered the place you are not liable; they could have said it was a possible new tenant etc.

It is more a matter of contract and agreement. If they agreed and you relied, they cannot change terms.
