This depends on what is happeneing. If the tenant has not paid rent then a 3 day pay or quit notice is given to tenant. If you just want to end tenancy and your the Landlord you give a 30 day notic eif tenant has rented less than one year or 60 day notice to vacate if over one year

Different jurisdictions have different notice requirements. Subsidized housing agencies also may require a different notice.

In San Francisco, it's just the 3-day (Pay or Quit, Cure or Quit, Quit due to Legal Nuisance), 30-day, and 60-day notices. No 5-, 7-, or 10-day notices. I believe that Section 8 recipients require a 60-day notice under certain circumstances, but if you contact them, they can advise when you can and cannot use them.
