Default roommate left without any notice

my roommate and i are renting a house, and the landlord says we must stay for at least 6 months. The landlord says he will get us to sign a contract about it, but before we could sign it, my roommate left without any notice.

what now??

You both rented a place without ANY signed contract? And you both moved in? Then without a signed lease, you are considered month to month tenants. Each needs to give your state's required amount of notice to terminate and owe the rent for that period. Please list your state and I can tell you how long the roommate is responsible to pay. In the meantime, don't sign the lease if you will be unable to afford the place on your own.

You will need to pay rent in full regardless of roomate status otherwise you face eviction. Whatever cost you incur you can sue former roomate for. However withut aq signed lease the best you can hope for is one maybe two months rent (roomate's share)
