Confused Moved in early/ Overlapping lease

I just moved into a house on the 25th of July that I'm leasing (a week early- only time that I was able to get off work and the realtor had no problem with it ) to find out that the lady next door's son was the last person to lease it and his lease isn't up until the 31st/ he hasn't been living there for months and she was shocked at first but seemed okay with it after I explained the situation and that the realtor was aware. She now wants money from me because I moved in early and is still holding on to a set of keys for the house. I think if anyone owes her son money it's the realtor -seeing as I was unaware that it was still being leased when I moved in.

Any ideas???

Tell the lady next door to pound sand. You are under no obligation to pay her anything. She is not your LL, nor is she entitled to collect rent for that rental unit. She doesn't own it, she doesn't even pay rent for it. If anyone should have an issue, it would be the son, but since he hasn't been living there for months, the realtor (and probably the LL) considered the property abandoned.

As for that set of keys she has, inform the realtor about this and demand that they have the rental re-keyed IMMEDIATELY. If they will not, then YOU do it and deduct the cost from your first month's rent. You do NOT want someone else having keys to your unit that you don't know, and especially someone who wants to extort money from you like that neighbor lady is.

You don't owe her or anyone else anything. If her son paid rent for the entire month (including the week you moved in early,) he can ask the LL for that money back, not you.

Definitely get that place rekeyed since she has access to your home.
