I am currently bound into a lease to move into a certain apartment complex. After signing the lease I have learned of the unsafe environment that this complex is a part of. Thefts, burglaries, assaults have all taken place here. I have accumulated a long police report list containing this information. In the lease, it states that I cannot cancel the lease for any reason and that they are not responsible for my safety. I wanted to know if there was any law above this lease that states if a tenant's safety is in question that they should be able to cancel the lease. I have not even moved in yet and the lease does not begin for a few more months. Please help me!

Sorry. It seems you did your due diligence too late. The time for that research was before you signed the lease, not after. The LL is not responsible for crime in a neighborhood. It is not reason to terminate a lease unless the LL is the one committing the crimes or allowing them to be committed. As long as he provides the required locks, and secure doors and windows, this is not a legitimate reason to break the lease. The only way out is to negotiate a buy out of the lease with the LL. Next time, do the research before you sign. Wish I had a better answer for you.
