My girlfriend and I have been living at our current residence (my house) for almost 4-years. Prior to this we lived in an apartment where we both paid 50/50.
During the time I acquired the house the understanding was the arrangement was the same. However, she was in school when I got the house and I let her slide alot on her half. She has completed school and is still not contributing her half of the living expenses. I have however gotten into debt carrying her thinking that once she graduated and got back into the workforce things would even out. That has not been the case and it's going on 3 months since she's graduated and all she has is a part-time job that would not even cover our electric and water for a month. We have no written agreement and everything (house/utilites/cable) is in my name. How do I get her out? |

This is an easy question. Since she is a resident in the house and has rights there, all you need to do is to terminate her rights to be there. Serve her a letter stating that she has a certain amount of time to move out of the house, remove all of her possessions, and return the keys to you. How much time you have to give her depends on your state. In FL, you only need to give her a 15 day notice. Keep a copy of the notice you give her. If she does not move out within that time, take the notice to the court and file for eviction. You need not give any reason to leave except in NJ. If you think this will turn ugly, or that she will damage/steal some of your belongings, photograph them now while she is at work to prove their existance. You can sue her after she moves to get their value.
