Apartment application question

By applying for an apartment does this mean I am legally obligated to anything?

No--not until you make an agreement and/or sign a lease.

An application, or paying an application fee, does not obligate you in any way. Only after signing the lease OR paying rent/deposit would you be obligated.

If you pay a holding fee then later refuse to rent it, you can lose the holding fee, but still would be under no further obligation.

Signing the lease obligates you to the terms contained in that lease. You are obligated for the length of time that the lease lasts or until the unit is re-rented.

Paying rent or a deposit shows an intent to rent (although without a signed lease you would be considered a month to month tenant). You would have to give the amount of notice required by your state to terminate and will be obligated for the rent through that period. A few states would not hold you to be obligated by paying deposit only.

But hust filling out an aplication doesn't obligate you. Call them and tell them you have found sopmething else.
