non legal lease agreement

i was living with a friend in a three bed one and a half bath house where his morgadge was 725 a mo he charged me 400 a mo and i was limited to the use of the stuff in the house i couldnt use the kitchen to put my food i couldnt use the heat for my wife and baby and when he kicked us out he said it wasnt me he wanted gone it was my wife and so i left with my wife and it was on the first of janurary when the next day rent was due so since i got kicked out on the first and rent was due the next day do i have to pay the 400 and does he have any right to hold my families belongings mainly all of our belongings being clothes and important papers and personal belonings????
