Confused Landlord lied about utility bill costs?

Landlord lied about utility bill costs?

Could anything be done about the utility bills at the apartment I currently occupy? My landlord told me that the apartment was well insulated and that heat in the winter time was not a problem. Now the winter time is here and I have a 6 fold increase in my heating bill and my house feels like the wind is blowing through it. I’ve currently don’t what I could to stop any air drafts. Drafts so bad they could practically put out a candle.

Is there any advice that someone could share? Or what rights I have?

I signed a lease stating that all utilities bills I have to pay for, but under a false assumption.

I live in Pennsylvania

Default Re: Landlord lied about utility bill costs?

You can't do anything or break your lease. It is up to you to check with utility companies to see what average costs are on that unit. The LL doesn't live there, how would he know what they run? And utility costs are based on individual usage, so your bill can be higher than an identical unit next to yours. If you set your thermostat higher, use more water, take more showers, etc., your costs will be higher. (My thermostat stays on 65 all winter, so my costs are lower than my neighbors who keep theirs at 72.)

You can place plastic on all your windows, put doorsweeps on the doors, place weatherstripping on doors and windows, insulating covers under the switch and outlet plates, etc. to lower your bills. You can lower your thermostat when you leave for work, and overnight. Put an insulating blanket around your hot water heater. Put thermal wraps around exposed hot water pipes in cold areas like a basement. These things can be done easily and cheaply and will save you a bundle. Most of these items are available at discount stores and will easily pay for themselves.
