We recently found out that our apartment complex authorized their landscaping company to spray a chemical that is toxic to animals - in the dog run area! Our dog has since been treated for a skin infection and we've found out other dogs in the complex have had the same problem. What can we do? Not only do we want them to pay the vet bill but we'd like to see some official action taken against them as they could have killed our dog. We are currently trying to track down the name of the chemical but I think it's a safe assumption that if it's harmful to animals, it's probably not good for people either. Can we break our lease because of this? Can we file a complaint with someone? We have had consistent issues with them in terms of garbage in the common areas (as well as rats recently). They do not maintain the property very well which was bad enough but this is too much.
Thanks!!! |

Without knowing what specifically was sprayed, you have no basis for anything. Find out what they sprayed and post it here. Contact the landscaping company and ask.
Then do some research on that chemical and the strength that they sprayed. Some chemicals are only toxic while still wet, but once dry they aren't a problem. Some are only harmful in concentrated doses but are OK to use when used in accordance with proper strength. Some are toxic to birds and fish, but not to dogs or cats. Without knowing what was used, you can't ask for vet bills, terminate a lease, or any other action. Additionally, I doubt your dog's skin infection was caused by the chemical. Infections are caused by bacteria, not chemicals. A skin irritation, rash, or burn would be a more likely result from a chemical, as well as intestinal problems or other such reactions. A skin infection is more likely caused by some bacteria from a pest or insect. |
