Default medical reason to break lease

Lease is in Dallas, TX. I am from Denver, CO. Recently I spent several weeks in ICU for pulmonary adema with my lungs. I am 5 months into a 12 month lease. I need to stay in Denver due to medical reasons. Is this enough to terminate a lease?

Default Re: medical reason to break lease

Legally, your medical condition has nothing to do with the lease. The rented unit did not cause your medical conditon and the LL is to be held without harm for it (without loss of income).

However, I suggest you or a close family member call the LL and explain the situation. Most LLs are reasonable people and will understand that you cannot live in a unit when your medical condition requires you to stay in or near a hospital in another state. They may allow you to break the lease, sublet to another tenant, or find some other solution to the problem. Try communicating with them and see what they say. Do this quickly as they will need to re-rent the unit within a few weeks. Few places rent during the holiday season between Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Years.
