Hello. I am 5 1/2 months pregnant and have been planning a home birth since the get go. I have been paying for, receiving care from, and getting to know my three midwives. Our current landlady was completely comfortable with the home birth (even though I may not have needed to disclose this information). However, last minute, we decided to move to a better location, closer to my partners work. We found a wonderful guest house, where the set up is almost ideal, and the land owners (a couple with a one year old) seem to be very nice and easy going people. They choose us and feel that we would be perfect tenants on the shared property. However, when we told them we were having a home birth, they said they needed to check with their lawyer about liability. Additionally, the woman who owns and lives in the main house had a emergency C-section a year ago when birthing her daughter in the hospital because her daughter was stuck in the birth canal, head showing, but the mom was stuck on her back because of her epidural. Well, the lawyer said no way, not even if I signed a waiver, and the mom also doesn't feel comfortable with it (I actually think this is the driving force behind it more than anything). Now I don't know what to do, whether it is any of their business how I birth, and whether I need to find a different living situation, although this really seems ideal for us...considering...
I then spoke to the woman today, told her about my concerns and disappointment, gave her more info about home birth, our plan, our back up plan, the researched safety of home births, and whatever I could tell her in the 30 minutes we spoke. She seemed to open up, beings that home birth is often a very foreign, even alien idea to many people, and we agreed to meet and discuss it in more detail on Sunday. I hope we can figure something out... But in the meantime, I wanted to find out any other information people might be willing to offer or share...so that I can continue to be well informed and help this process go smoothly. Thanks! |

Technically once you rent it is not up to her or them.
But now that you have raised the issue you should negotiate a solution or perhaps change locations. It is understandable that a property owner does not want a potential issue or even a potential medical emergency on the property so the concern is not wholly irrational. |

once you rent and pay the rent it is your choice how and where you want to have your kids. Explain to the woman that the midwives are certified and medically trained to help in emergency situations and that you trust them.
