Confused Michigan - Landlord doesn't have right to rent...?

We've rented a house from our landlord for almost 2 years now with no real issues besides the crazy lady that lives behind us.
She called the city on us with claims of poison ivy growing into her yard and they put a notice on our door about cleaning up the backyard overgrowth. Also on the notice was a claim that the landlord does not have the right to be renting out the house.
This is news to us. What are our options? What can happen to us?
We were planning on moving in the next few months anyways, but I'd like to know what could possibly happen to us, and how fast it could happen.

Thanks!

Why don't you call the city department that posted the notice and ask? It may be a zoning issue (not being a multi-unit zoned area), or a lack of a certificate of occupancy. A zoning issue isn't a big deal in many areas. (A small fine to the LL and make him get it zoned correctly.) A CO may mean the unit just needs to be inspected. You'll never know until you ask. Give them a call tomorrow.
