Need advice ASAP!!
I am actually posting this for my sister>> A close family friend needed somewhere to stay when her roommate at the time suddenly died of a massive heart attack. My sister allowed the friend to stay with her until she could get on her feet (she had no job and a small child). The agreement was that if she was going to stay more than a week she would need to pay a third of the rent and utilities. When she started to stay she did pay her portion of the rent for the months of April and May, however, she didn't pay any of the utilities. My sister and her boyfriend (who also lives in the apartment) are going to be moving out of the apartment when their lease is up at the end of Aug. They gave her a notice in the middle of May stating that she would need to be out June 30th. They went on vacation for Memorial Day weekend and when they returned (May 27th) the friend had left a note stating that she would be gone until the end of the week. She has not been back to the apartment since then with the exception of two times. She did not pay her portion of the rent for June. She has left all of her personal belongings in the apartment, and has not contacted them to try to retrieve the items. The two times she entered the apartment she still did not take any of the personal items she left behind, and she hasn't left any information on where she is staying or how to contact her. My question is how long does my sister and her boyfriend have to keep her belongings? It has been over a month of no contact with them. The last time she entered the apartment, she left a note stating that they would be receiving a check with her portion of June's rent and the money she owes for damages her son did to the apartment. They still haven't received anything since then. We just don't know what the next steps are to make sure that they are doing everything legally. They aren't able to hold her belonging too much longer as they are moving out of the apartment themselves, but have no way of contacting her to come and remove her things.
