landlord lied to sheriff

My landlord who I am taking to court has told the sheriff upon being served (after numereous attempts) that the person (himself)being served is unknown at that address. Now he lives right across the street from me, I have a recent letter from him stating that is his address and what am I supposed to do? Does the sheriff file that with the court? Or do I have to get it reserved and stand there with the process server?

Once personal service has failed, there are other methods of service available to the court. Ask them to attempt the next type of service. It could be certified mail, regular mail with delivery receipt, a private process server, service by publication, or another type of service. It may cost you (if a private server). The types of service allowed vary in each state's courts. Good luck.

(If you do have to use a private process server, ask for a young female. The guy is more apt to open the door and will be less likely to suspect her as a porocess server. If not, get a young guy, put him in a pizza delivery shirt and give him an empty pizza box. It appears to the residents as if the kid just has the wrong address and it sometimes works to get them to open the door.)
