I have an office in a building located in Huntington, New York. My lease expires in March 2009. The last six months the landlord has been doing extensive construction outside the building creating noise and odors. The landlord is creating a large parking lot with blacktop and also redoing the front structure of the building. Last night there was a fire inside the building in which much was destroyed. The landlord is now saying that all the tenants must be out of the building before the end of the weekend.The fire was not in my office and my personal property was not harmed. I would like to know if i am intitled to have the landlord pay out the remainder of my lease. If not, is there any compensation that i am entitled to? thank you.

If your unit was not damaged, why do you need to leave? I'd contact the fire marshal and obtain a report on the fire. Ask if he ordered the place evacuated. If not, I'd ask the LL why you have to leave. Then ask for compensation for the construction or for moving expenses. Also get a letter allowing you out of your lease without obligation.
